Natural Solutions for Seasonal Hair Loss
12 November 2023
As the weather cools, you may notice increased hair shedding and thinning. Whilst some hair loss is perfectly normal especially this time of year, it is helpful to give your hair and scalp a little extra care this time of year to reduce excess loss.
What Causes Seasonal Hair Loss?
During cooler months, constricted blood vessels in the scalp reduce blood flow and nutrients to hair follicles. Drier air also depletes moisture, leading to brittle strands. The drop in sunlight can mean lower vitamin D production, another factor in healthy hair growth.
Aromatherapy for Hair Follicle Stimulation
Certain essential oils can improve circulation to hair follicles for strengthened strands.
Rosemary oil – Stimulates circulation to the scalp and has antioxidant properties. Use 2-3 drops.
Lavender oil – Soothes the scalp and contains compounds that stimulate growth. Use 2 drops.
Thyme oil – Improves blood flow and nutrients to hair follicles. Use 1-2 drops.
- Mix 2 drops each of these oils with 1 tbsp of castor oil or argan oil. Massage into scalp and let it soak in for 15 mins before washing out.
- Do this 2-3 times per week for best results.
Oils for Stress, Sleep, and Hormonal Balance
High stress, sleep deprivation, and hormonal changes can exacerbate hair thinning.
Clary sage, ylang ylang, and geranium balance hormones, while lavender, vetiver, and marjoram calm the mind for better sleep. Diffuse these oils daily and add to baths to soak stress away. A balanced, rested, and calm body & mind, gives you healthier hair!
The Takeaway
While some increased shedding is normal this time of year, aromatherapy can help mitigate seasonal hair loss. Nourish follicles with circulation-stimulating oils massaged into the scalp. And don’t forget the mind-body connection – reduce stress to balance hormones and sleep. Consistency and self-care is key for seeing results.
